PREPARING FOR WINTER WEATHER

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Greetings!

I am writing to follow up on UGA’s message regarding the winter weather for our area. We want to reiterate how important it is to take this weather event seriously and to prepare with care and intention. Ice storms in the U.S. South can be especially dangerous because roadways, walkways, and power systems are not built for prolonged freezing conditions. Even a thin layer of ice can cause power outages, fallen tree limbs, blocked roads, and dangerously slippery surfaces.

Please know that winter weather emergencies here may differ significantly from conditions in your home country or areas where you have lived previously. Ice storms, different from snowstorms, create hazards that cannot be safely navigated on foot or by car. Staying indoors, conserving heat, and following guidance are essential steps for your safety.

If you are staying in UGA Housing on-campus, please take the following steps as soon as possible:

  • Let your RA know: Please complete the check-in form so staff know who remains in the building.
  • Set your thermostat to HEAT at 68°F (20°C) or the lowest heat setting. This helps prevent frozen pipes and maintains building safety.
  • If you live in University Village:
    • Turn your kitchen and bathroom faucets to a slow drip (hot and cold).
    • Open the cabinet doors under the kitchen sink to help warm air circulate

For all students, on or off campus:

  • Set your thermostat to HEAT at 68°F (20°C) or the lowest heat setting. This helps prevent frozen pipes and maintains building safety.
  • Charge all devices and power banks while electricity is stable.
  • Prepare an emergency bag in case relocation becomes necessary due to an extended power outage. Please include:
    • Medications (refill your prescriptions early if possible)
      • The University Health Center Pharmacy is only open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm, so prescriptions will need to be filled at alternative pharmacies if needed urgently.
    • Several changes of clothing
      Toiletries
    • Flashlights or portable lights
    • Chargers
    • Snacks
    • Blankets/pillows
    • Books or board games
  • If you have a service animal or emotional support animal, pack food, water, and any needed items. Animals must remain crated or on a leash if relocation becomes necessary.
  • Continue checking: https://emergency.uga.edu for official updates.
  • Report facilities issues immediately to your community’s front desk.

If a prolonged outage occurs in UGA Housing, you may be required to relocate temporarily to designated areas with emergency heat and meal services. This is a standard safety measure in the U.S. during severe winter conditions. You may not be able to stay in your assigned space during this time.

Information for Students with Children

If you are caring for children during the ice storm, please take the following steps:

  • Prepare essential supplies: extra warm clothing, diapers/wipes, formula or snacks, medications, and one or two comfort items (toy, blanket).
  • Pack simple activities to keep children calm and occupied (books, coloring items).
  • Charge all devices
  • Stay indoors, as icy roads and walkways will be unsafe for children and adults.

If temporary relocation is required due to a power outage for On-Campus UGA Residents:

  • Your children are welcome
  • Bring all necessary supplies with you
  • Inform staff of any medical, developmental, or dietary needs so they can assist.

If you depend on childcare or transportation:

  • Local childcare centers, schools, and buses may close or delay services.
  • Plan to keep children with you and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
